MEAL PLAN UNIVERSITY: LESSON 1- Healthy Eating 101
The choice is simple, right? Pick the apple and you'll be skinny, be able to run 5 miles, and live happily ever after...
WRONG! It's easy to think that, but it's about creating healthy habits and also finding balance! I LOVE me a good donut, but I know that a donut a day will NOT make me happy or healthy! (learned that one the hard way 😏) I also know that eating a healthy snack and making healthier choices more often make my body FEEL good. It makes me happier! As you choose to eat healthier, get a plan for your nutrition, try to really THINK about how you FEEL when you follow a plan, make healthier choices etc....is it WORTH IT? For me, it absolutely has been worth it. I truly am HAPPIER when I choose to live a little HEALTHIER!
Now, some tips and our first assignment!!!
TOP 5 "Healthier & Happier" Tips:
1 . WATER, WATER, AND MORE WATER- One way to jumpstart the eating clean lifestyle and shed some pounds is by trading soda and juice for cold, crisp water. Water keeps you energized, flushes out toxins and waste, increases your metabolism and helps your body assimilate vitamins and minerals...YEP! All that and MORE! Water is really amazing! If you're a soda-holic (like me) try adding berries, lemon, and stevia to your water for an awesome lemonade treat! I also occasionally use "Crystal Light PURE" lemonade packs when I'm in a pinch or want a little caffeine ;).
2. WRITE IT DOWN- Whether you need to lose five pounds, 50 or more, or if you just want to stop eating junk, the best thing you can do is grab a pen and some paper and write down WHAT you're eating and drinking. So often we get caught up in life and we don't even know what we're putting into our bodies- whenever it's too much or not enough. It's important to know where we're at in order to know where we need to go! A great app for this is called "My Fitness Pal".
3. GIVE YOURSELF PERMISSION TO CHANGE- Need some motivation to eat better and feel good about yourself? Take time to think deep down inside about what you want in your life and use that to inspire change. What does a healthier, more originanized eating plan mean for you? For your family? How will changing your habits serve you? Once you have these ideas- create a VISION board so you can see daily a reminder of WHY you are changing and what it truly means to you.
4. GET RID OF THE JUNK- Now, if you live with other people (especially kids!) I realize this might not be completely possible or realistic for everyone at this point---BUT you can still try and make small changes. Stop buying chips, cookies, and extra treats at the store. Let your kids pick a cereal instead of a sweet treat and encourage them to choose a healthier one (for us that means Chex, Cheerios, Golden Grahms, Honey Comb....basically nothing chocolate or fruity). Try a different bread out- my kids love cracked wheat because it's more like white bread but still a little healthier! When buying treats- buy ones that your kids like but ones that won't tempt you. Not having junk around lessens the temptation and won't be there for you to grab when you're stressed!
5. BYE, BYE SUGAR- Sugar can be found in some surprising places. When shopping for food, make sure to read the ingredient labels carefully to avoid ingesting hidden sugar. Typically foods that claim to be "low fat" are higher in sugar. So be careful! If you choose to cut your sugar intake (even in small ways!) not only will you supercharge your weight loss efforts, and your health, but you’ll also notice that your cravings for sweets will be greatly diminished. I also like to make more homemade treats in order to cut sugar. I make my own freezer jam and use a low sugar recipe- my family loves it just the same! I use stevia when baking to help cut sugar too.
ASSIGNMENT: In your journal write "Healthier & Happier" at the top of a page. Choose at least 2 habits from the above list that will be your FOCUS for the next month. Use your journal to write your focus areas out and a plan of action and specific for each. (ex. I am going to drink more water each day and track my food intake. I will keep a food journal with me and write down everything I eat and drink through the day and evaluate at the end of each day.)
I've found that really focussing on a couple habits at a time really helps me become better at doing them daily. Instead of trying to "do it all at once" and then getting frustrated...you become an "expert" at one and it TRULY becomes a HEALTHY HABIT and a LIFESTYLE that is sustainable.
